There is something special about a video that starts completely in your head that you can actually end up executing. I created this video in 1 weeks time to be used at The Park during our Psalms series. I’ve always loved this passage of scripture because the line “in the name of our God set up our banners.” Something about that idea visually connected in my mind, and I wanted to create a video that gave emphasis to that.

Here is a little “Behind the Scenes” if you will.

This is part of my storyboard. Notice my beautifully hand drawn stick figures. I was inspired very quickly after reading this passage what I wanted the video to look like, so I had to slow my brain down in order to draw and write everything.

Here are some screen shots of the raw footage. All of this was done on the extreme cheap. The “green screen” is really a homemade pipe and base I made out of PVC pipe and electrical conduit combined with an aqua king sheet from Walmart. The lights are all shop lights except for my trust LED light. Add in 2 fans, some realistic sweat (aided by shooting in a detached, un-air-conditioned garage in South Texas during the summer), and some fishing line to puppeteer the robe, and you’ve got some keyable footage. I know I should’ve at least ironed the sheet and diffused the lights a little better, but the fact is, I knew I was going to scale and composite this footage to death, so it was much more forgivable.

It should be noted that the “flag pole” was my shop broom handle, and the sword used is also the same one my son used for his Halloween costume last year.

A couple of images used in the compositing. These are both pictures I took at Enchanted rock.

True story: I really wanted to shoot some footage of San Antonio churches. I have a fondness for the way the people of God choose to build the house of God, and footage of sacred places is perfect for church videos that I want to create.

I decided it was better to go shoot than to continually plan. I went with a friend to eat lunch at Chris Madrid’s. Afterwords, we just started driving around looking for churches. We stumbled upon Laurel Heights United Methodist. We were struck by the beauty of the architecture, so we decided to see if we could get permission to shoot. I was skeptical, afraid that the church would be untrusting of strangers. I was more than surprised by their hospitality. I met Senior Pastor Jim McClain, who graciously gave us full permission to shoot and gave us a map of the building.

While shooting in their sanctuary, we were greeted by Kercida McClain, Director of Christian Education. She told us we needed to check out the church’s tower. She got a key and let us in to the upper areas of the church. I was amazed by the tower, the beautiful church, and the hospitality of the staff.

Footage of this amazing church will be used soon. Here are a couple of shots.

This is a quick timeline I created for an illustration at The Park Community Church (theparksa.org).

It all appears to go by very fast, but the trick is in how I set it up for playback in ProPresenter (propresenter.com).

I used MPEG Streamclip to cut the video into 11 pieces, each stopping at the timeline additions. Then, I insert into one presentation with each video stopping after playing. That way, in a live presentation, the video would animate to the next part of the timeline each time I would advance a slide. Worked like a charm.

Scott felt it fit really well into the message he was giving in Mark about us expecting God to do greater things.

I’ve always felt that this song needed a good local visual. San Antonio is a pretty big city (7th largest in the US, I think), and ever since listening to Mark Driscoll’s series on Nehemiah about building a city within the city I been looking around for anything good about San Antonio that doesn’t have any cowboy references in it. No luck.

So I decide to shoot a little of my own. Since these are background visuals for song lyrics, I framed the shots with logs of “blank” space for the text.

Plan B from Isenhower Productions on Vimeo.

Alamo Community Church, who I was able to create a launch video for, launched their site with a new sermon series, “Plan B”. When their Pastor, Kevin Flowers contacted me and asked me to create the design and an intro video for the series, I said yes without hesitation.

Plan B is a series based on the book by the same title by Pete Wilson. The big idea of the series is that in life we have plans that don’t pan out. What we are left with is dealing with life after our plans fail. Kevin really liked the idea of throwing away a piece of paper with a “Plan A” on it and throwing it away.

I developed the idea and produced the intro video for them. A few geeky details for those who care:

Shot on Canon T2i (550D) + Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX Macro

Bogen + Glidetrack (even when not using for moves, the Glidetrack is great for supporting low angle shots)

Edited in Adobe Premiere CS5

Effects in Adobe After Effects CS5

Color using Magic Bullet Looks for CS5

I am the hand model. They have starred in more than one video. Hopefully I can show the other here soon.
